If you are like many business owners with websites, then you have probably spent many hours tucked away in your office until the wee hours of the morning with your eyes glazed over trying to decipher through all of the information there is on the Web about paid search, internet advertising, pay per click (PPC), advertising and how to drive more traffic to your site in order to make more sales or generate more leads.

Well, let me be the first to tell you that it’s not easy! I know because like you, I used to be one of those people.

My journey began in 2001 when I started my very first business (and web site) and was forced to figure out the world of Internet marketing on my own.

I quickly found out however, it was not as easy as I thought it would be. So much information to digest… who has the time?

Like most people, I was guided by this false Field-Of-Dreams-Like belief that if I build it “they would come”. Well, I built a web site [actually I paid someone else to do it so it was professional], but I can assure you they most definitely did not just “come”. In 2003, I set out to hire someone to advertise my business online because I had absolutely no idea how to do it. I was clueless.

Much to my dismay, I was unable to find anyone that I trusted or felt comfortable with because at that time there were only a handful of paid search experts online and I had no idea how to choose one because the industry was still relatively new. So it was then that I decided to learn the ins and outs of paid search myself.

I went on to find only moderate success with that business because, frankly, it was a business model that was ‘not quite ready for prime time’, and so I continued to work on other web-based business ventures and web sites with some other people.

Over the next several years that followed, and after attending countless Internet marketing seminars and conferences, and experiencing a tremendous amount of trial and error, I finally learned exactly how to cost effectively advertise my businesses online. Many of these strategies are still very effective to this day if done correctly. Things like:

  • Article submission and distribution
  • Banner and text ads in industry specific newsletters and publications
  • Classified ads
  • Press release submission and distribution both online and off
  • Link Baiting

Then new ways of promoting a business online were discovered and became very popular like:

  • Blog posts
  • Social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, and LinkedIn
  • Contextual ads

And the list goes on and on and on. Months later I decided to start my own internet consulting firm and much like physicians and attorneys who specialize in a very specific disciplines, I decided to specialize in Paid Search, specifically Google Adwords.
